Yahoo! debuts Search BOSS
July 13, 2008 · Comments
Last July 9, Yahoo! debuted the Search BOSS, which stands for Build Your Own Search Service. It builds on the existing Yahoo! Search API, giving you more flexibility with results returned from Yahoo!: no more result limits, no restrictions on presentation (you don’t even have to say you’re using BOSS), and you can manipulate results by reordering them or inserting your own results. A monetization platform will also come in the near future.
When I first heard about this internally, I was excited–the possibilities in my head were enormous: if you have a fabulous idea for presentation, and/or a great algorithm, but you couldn’t crawl the web extensively enough, you can harness Yahoo!’s search index and feed that into your current index. Instant win! I’m psyched I can finally talk about this now, although I probably wouldn’t be the best person to discuss its intricacies.
A few have already implemented Yahoo! Search BOSS, so if you’re looking for what’s out there, drop by hakia (a semantic search engine), Me.dium Search (crowd-powered social search), Daylife and Cluuz.
For more information, there’s Yodel Anecdotal’s launch post, Yahoo! Search Blog’s launch post, an insider’s view on Search BOSS, and of course one should check out Yahoo! Developer Network’s section on Yahoo! Search BOSS.
