PHP Roadshow on the Go!
February 1, 2009 · Comments
PHP Roadshow is an outreach to college students with the goal of reaching the same level of programming competency of our counterparts (Filipino and non-Filipino) outside of the country (including standardizations and value of work).
This is an initiated project of PHP User Group Philippines, Inc. (PHPUGPH), in support of the organization’s mission of advocating and disseminating the use of PHP (Hypertext Pre-processor) as well as Open Source technologies in schools and companies in the Philippines.
Competitive volunteer speakers from PHPUGPH discuss FOSS topics including PHP and MySQL, Content Management Systems (CMS) like Joomla! and Drupal, database designing, programming best practices and other related topics for the PHP Roadshow.
Below are some of the schools already visited by the PHP Roadshow:

December 16, 2008 · Comments

Google as you know used to release beta’s all the time for its new browser Chrome, the last “beta” update version was 0.4.154.29 but now Google has announced that in their 15th release (which is already released) that they will be taking off the beta label. So what we have here is a fully functional stable product. Currently there is no change-log available. And I did not see any difference using it either (maybe because I didn’t use it much yet :P)… Anyhow according to Google they have fixed some common bugs found in Chrome, improved the bookmark manger and privacy controls, also they say its 1.4 to 1.5 times faster than the beta.
You can now download it here

Go to ‘Run’ then type regedit.

- The Windows Registry editor will appear. THis time, we just need to tweak just one registry key here. We’ll use fist the pane at the left to navigate to the registry key.

- Let’s make things easy for newbies. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main Use the pane at the left just like you’re using Windows Explorer.
- Click on Edit Menu to add a new String Value then label it as ‘Window Title’
double-click it to add a value in it then type in your desired title.
- Restart IE, then see the changes..It works perhaps all versions of IE including 8 beta 2.
Wordpress Acquires Polldaddy
October 16, 2008 · Comments
Automattic, the company behind WordPress, bought the Irish startup Polldaddy (which is my poll service of choice and used in this blog). This is to further push and make WordPress better more than other things, similar to the recent acquisition of IntenseDebate. However, the acquisition, just like IntenseDebate and Gravatar, will not lead to exclusivity of the service to WordPress users.
Polldaddy’s stiff competitor in the Poll service space is Vizu, which provide features that daddy’s poll doesn’t provide. However, the same can be said for Vizu, and thus I created a test post displaying the two top poll services side-by-side: POLL: Where are you from?
Congratulations and good luck to Polldaddy and Automattic!

October 16, 2008 · Comments
MSN Groups, one of the last remnants of the MSN Brand, is going to shutdown its services on February 21, 2009. All groups in the service will be given a chance to move their group, discussions, files, and histories over to Multiply – the 8th largest Social Network today.
The optional migration will hopefully start next week, as MSN and Multiply do the final testing on the scripts. After this, Microsoft will be able to concentrate and pool all their resources to the upcoming Windows Live Groups.
Below is the letter posted by Charlotte Jones, Group Product Manager of Microsoft, in the CommunityFeedback of MSN Groups.
You may have heard rumors that MSN Groups will in closing, I’d like to respond to those here so that our most active users have the information you need to manage your groups effectively. It is true that we are planning to close the MSN Groups service on February 21, 2009 and will offer you the opportunity to move your group to our new partner service, Multiply. We understand the importance of keeping your group together, so we partnered with Multiply to create a migration process that moves your group to their service to preserve your online community and its history.
The migration method that Multiply has built for you is still in the beta stage, we plan to open it next week. Once the service is ready we’ll be sending all of our users an email and will post notices within the MSN Groups site with more information, including instructions for beginning the migration process. In the meantime I encourage you to visit http://Multiply.com to get to know the service and see some of the thousands of groups they host already.
The natural question to ask in this situation is why we are closing MSN Groups. It is our goal to provide our customers with the most current and user friendly technology available today. We made the difficult decision to close the MSN Groups service as part of an overall investment in updating and re-aligning our online services with Windows Live. In the long term we believe that closing the service is the best way to continue to offer innovative, best of breed services that help you stay in touch with the people you care about. It’s very important to us that you keep the data you created using MSN Groups and that is why we have partnered with Multiply, so you can keep your group going into the future despite the closure of MSN Groups.
Between today and February 21, 2009 the MSN Groups service will remain the same as it is now. We will remove the option to add more storage to your group but other features will remain until the service is shut down and you can use it the same way you do today until the date of closure. Watch the site and your email inbox over the next week as we will post updated information there, including a more detailed outline of your options and next steps.
Regards,
Charlotte Jones, Group Product Manager, Microsoft

September 20, 2008 · Comments
Yahoo! recently launched a “Start Wearing Purple” campaign which is basically a celebration of all things purple, about recognizing that unique, charmingly eccentric side of all of us. It invites everyone to wear purple and paint the town purple. Of course, all this points to what it means to be a Yahoo! as purple has long been the color of the company (why you may ask, click here to find out). Apparently, this campaign seems to have extended to the Yahoo! homepage as a new homepage is soon to be launched – and it’s very purple. Check out this screenshot now:
Tapan Bhat, Yahoo! SVP for Front Doors, Communities and Network Services explains in the Yodel Anecdotal that the new homepage will “help you get more out of the Internet, make more of your precious time, and make sense of all the things going on in your world.” How exactly wil this happen? Here are his two points:
1. One easy check-in point. With this new homepage, you can now add your fave services (both Yahoo! and non-Yahoo!) making it almost like a My Yahoo! central place for you to check your emails, social networks, news, blogs and other services and applications that interests you online.
2. Helping you stay informed. The new design will make it easier to push fresh, new and relevant content to users (most likely from Buzz) aside from the traditional information you get with the current version. Through an open strategy, developers and publishers will be able to submit their own applications that can be featured in the Yahoo! homepage. This will easily allow users to receive information from their connections across Yahoo! and the Web in general.
It’s still in beta and just a handful of users will be able to view it but it’s definitely a welcome change and something to look forward to.

While Google was getting down and dirty to release their version of Google Chrome for Linux and Mac users, CrossOver Chromium got into the scene. This new browser uses a similar codebase with Google Chrome.
I haven’t tried CrossOver Chromium yet as I’ve always been a Windows person, but the screencaps show that Google Chrome and CrossOver Chromium are very much alike:

September 9, 2008 · Comments
This Google Chrome hype has been a consistent discussion especially among the tech community. Almost everyone had dissected this hip new browser and had given their own reviews. Everyone is excited! What amazes me is that almost every tech guru blogger had given his (or her) own opinion about this browser.
Like others I have this one brief date with this browser. I’m still with Google Chrome right now as I’m writing this brief article. I ended up having mixed feelings about this new guy in town.
What Turns Me On About Google Chrome
1. Really fast. I have to strongly agree with other bloggers that it loads up quickly on my 64-bit Windows XP system. It is mostly likely due to its simple flat design and the absence of extensions that made up this speedy browser.
2. One tab crash. The cool Google Chrome team designed this browser in a way that each tab would own its own process. This means that when one website hangs up, all the other windows are not affected. Another cool useful thing to see is that one can easily drag a tab down to open a new window, or simply drag that new window back up the tabs to return it to its tabbed state. Try it!
3. Hide your tracks. The incognito window provides a way to surf and not leave traces behind like cookie crumbs and footprint history. I’ve tried that but it could have been cooler if I am able to hide my IP address. Nevertheless, I’m still very happy to have that!
