The Yahoo 404 Ad

Geekzkrieg.com reports this crazy ad recently seen at the Giants stadium

Yahoo execs and the blogosphere chuckled when they saw this yahoo ad at a baseball stadium.
Apparently, the ad was placed besides the “404 feet” marker which stands for the length of that area from the home plate. Reports show that this happened at the Giants’ stadium
Sigh. It’s a Yahoo boboo once again.

The new PW site
Level Up Philippines has recently launched the new design for the Perfect World official website.
The new site was launched last week and I am awed by how great the design it. It has elements of flash, the navigation has been fixed with the goal of having information more easy to find by the players. Plus, I was told that the team is integrating fresh, new content into the site such as a new game guide and (soon) a quest guide for all PW players.

Description
Secret Maryo Chronicles is an Open-Source two-dimensional platform game with a style designed similar to classic side-scroller games. It uses the platform independent library SDL and, since version 0.98, the OpenGL accelerated Graphics Renderer. The game is developed in C++.

I was looking for a FLOSS version, clone, or adaptation of Nintendo®’s Super Mario Bros.™, the first console game I played with my first and only console platform – the Nintendo Family Computer (released 1984 in the Philippines, after the massive product recall of the first version). I found Tux-related versions, however, as cute as Penguins are and a Linux user myself, I still want something closer to the original ‘SMB’. I found Secret Maryo Chronicles.

Want to have RSS feeds in your Java application? Try Rome..
“Rome is an open source library for generating, parsing and manipulating RSS and Atom feeds. It supports different RSS and Atom feed formats such as Atom 0.3, and Atom 1.0, RSS 0.90, RSS 0.91 Netscape, RSS 0.91 Userland, RSS 0.92, RSS 0.93, RSS 0.94, RSS 1.0 and RSS 2.0.”
A couple months back, I got to use the Rome library to implement RSS in Archiva. What I liked about Rome is how it’s so easy to understand and use. To generate an RSS feed, you basically just need to be familiar with these three classes: SyndFeed, SyndEntry and SyndContent. These three are Java interfaces with the following concrete implementations: SyndFeedImpl, SyndEntryImpl and SyndContentImpl respectively. Here’s a short example on how you can generate a RSS 2.0 feed:
SyndFeed feed = new SyndFeedImpl(); // create the feed
Date publishDate = new Date( System.currentTimeMillis() );feed.setTitle( “Techblog.ph RSS Feeds” );
feed.setDescription( “RSS feeds of blog entries from Techblog.ph” );
feed.setLanguage( “en-us” );
feed.setPublishedDate( publishDate );
feed.setFeedType( “rss_2.0″ ); // set the type of your feedList<SyndEntry> entries = new ArrayList<SyndEntry>();
SyndEntry entry = new SyndEntryImpl(); // create a feed entry
entry.setTitle( “Generating RSS Feeds with Rome” );
entry.setPublishedDate( publishDate );SyndContent content = new SyndContentImpl(); // create the content of your entry
content.setType( “text/plain” );
content.setValue( “Want to have RSS feeds in your Java application? Try Rome…..” );entry.setDescription( content );
entries.add( entry );
feed.setEntries( entries ); // you can add multiple entries in your feed
For the published date, make sure that you update it whenever you have a new entry and publish the feed so that the reader knows there were changes/updates in your feed.
Now, to publish your feed.. you can write it into a file (example, write it to rss.xml) which the feed reader checks for updates or you can generate the feed by request (like how it is done in Archiva). If you are publishing your feeds by writing it on a file, you might need to read the file into a SyndFeed before adding new entries as shown below:
SyndFeedInput input = new SyndFeedInput();
SyndFeed feed = input.build( new XmlReader( outputFile ) );

Globe iPhone 3G Countdown Launch Party!
August 22, 2008 · Comments
Are you wondering what happened last night at the Globe iPhone 3G Countdown Launch Party?
Try to the watch the archived (live) streaming of the event at Qik and Bambuser! The Qik stream was captured through a Nokia E71 while the Bambuser stream was created through my Sony Ericsson P990i.
Capturing photos was somewhat hard for my SE P990i’s had a weird reaction adjusting to the lights and all so I just thought that it would be much better to stream the event live. The connection I had used was one of the 5 free WiFi access points that Globe provided during the event at Ayala Tower One.
So how about you? Are you planning to get an iPhone too or do you have one already? :)

The Y!Philippines Developers’ Night Recap and an invite to Y!HQ in Sunnyvale
August 21, 2008 · Comments
The Yahoo! Philippines Developers’ Night was held last Wednesday, August 14, in TGI Friday’s in Glorietta 3, where Yahoo! gave an overview of the Yahoo! Developer Network and discussed the future of the web development scene in the Philippines with the developers who attended the networking session. There was food, drinks, swag, and a healthy flow of techie conversations.
As the one giving the YDN overview, I was worried about possible low turnout due to the heavy rains prior and during the early part of the event–but in the end, the place was packed! I met many local developers, shared Yahoo! details and trivia, and learned from them as well. Jojo Anonuevo, our General Manager for Yahoo! Philippines, also gave an overview and is inviting Pinoy developers to apply for a chance to go to the Yahoo! HQ in Sunnyvale, California and represent the community. Give it a shot–applications are due 5:00PM on August 22.
Congratulations to Christine Amarra who won the lucky draw and took home the purple (but of course!) iPod, and thank you to all those who came to our event, and extra thanks go to those who blogged about it–Joe “phpcurious” Siao, Bob Reyes, PHP.ph and the people over at PinoyWebStartup.
Sa uulitin! :)

August 21, 2008 · Comments
Nokia had just announced a new Arte series Cellphone. The Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte, this cellphone is different from Nokia 8800 arte because this time it is made of carbon fiber and some 3D designs. Anyway here are some cool specs of this Cellphone.
240 x 320 pixels, 2.0 inches
Scratch-resistant glass
Living wallpapers
OLED, 16M colors
4 GB user memory
3G supported, up to 384 kbps
3.15 MP (2048×1536 pixels, autofocus
Video (VGA @ 15 FPS)
Carbon fibre and titanium body
MP3/AAC/eAAC player
Durable stainless steel covers
Turn-to-mute
Yup, It is made up of carbon fiber and its body is titanium. The only this that I love in this phone is the Scratch Resistant. Too bad its video is only at VGA@15 fps. Anyway it has a autofocus so don’t be sad. The Phone’s Features are like Nokia 8800 Arte but the only difference is their body, As I said earlier it is made up of Carbon Fiber and Titanium. So boys and girls Expect that this phone will be very expensive.

August 20, 2008 · Comments
Great news for the Pinoy blogosphere! Yahoo!’s very own social news site, Yahoo! Buzz, finally opens its arms to everyone. Launched last February of this year, Buzz was initially limited to a number of invited publishers who can post articles in Buzz and benefit from a tremendous surge in traffic when it gets pushed to Yahoo!’s home page.
Not anymore, starting today, Yahoo! Buzz will let anyone with an interesting story to share be able to submit a link and have the opportunity to get buzzed by the Yahoo! community. It was last July when Buzz dropped a hint to everyone through email that they will be opening their doors soon. Apparently it’s sooner than later as now, all of us can benefit from the service.
To anyone who appreciates the importance of social media, this is perfect timing. We all know how hard it is to penetrate established social news sites like Digg and Reddit. With Yahoo! Buzz opening up, it helps level the playing field and gives us more options to spread our stories and discover other compelling content that interests us. Click now and submit your story. :)
